Pelvic Health for Neurologic Conditions in Hollywood, FL

Multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury can all change how the bladder, bowel and sexual function work. Those changes are often treated as something to live with. Many of them can be improved.

01What Causes It

How neurologic conditions affect the pelvic floor.

The bladder, bowel and sexual organs depend on clear signals between the brain, the spinal cord and the pelvic floor muscles. When a neurologic condition disrupts those signals, the result can be urgency, leaking, difficulty emptying, constipation, bowel leakage, or changes in sexual sensation and function. The pattern depends on where and how the nervous system is affected, which is why the plan is built around you rather than the diagnosis. Pelvic floor therapy works alongside your neurologist, urologist and the rest of your care team.

Bladder symptoms are very common in MS, most often urgency, frequency and leaking, sometimes alongside difficulty emptying fully. Constipation and bowel urgency are common too, and fatigue and changes in sensation can affect sexual function. Because MS varies from person to person and over time, the plan is adjusted as your symptoms change, and energy conservation is built in so therapy does not cost you the rest of your day.

After a stroke, urgency and leaking are common, along with constipation and changes in sexual function and confidence. Reduced mobility, weakness on one side and communication changes can make it harder to get to the bathroom in time. Treatment combines pelvic floor retraining with practical strategies: timed voiding, toileting routines, transfers and positioning that work with the mobility you have.

Parkinson’s commonly brings urinary urgency and night-time trips to the bathroom, and constipation is one of its most frequent symptoms, sometimes appearing years before diagnosis. Pelvic floor muscles may not relax properly during a bowel movement. Coordination training, toileting position, bowel routines and urge control strategies all help, alongside sexual health concerns that are worth raising and that we discuss openly.

The level and completeness of a spinal cord injury shape how the bladder, bowel and sexual function are affected. Your medical team manages catheterization and medication. Pelvic floor therapy adds what it can within that plan: bowel routines, abdominal and pelvic floor activation where there is muscle function to train, positioning, skin and pressure awareness, and guidance on sexual function and intimacy after injury.

Changes in sensation, arousal, erection, lubrication, orgasm and comfort during sex are common with neurologic conditions, and they are rarely asked about in a busy appointment. They are a legitimate part of your health. Pelvic floor therapy addresses the muscle, sensation and positioning side, and your therapist can coordinate with your physician on the medical side.

02How PT Helps

How physical therapy in Hollywood helps.

Treatment starts with understanding your condition, your symptoms and what your day looks like. Your first visit at Wellsprings Health runs 30 to 60 minutes, one on one, in a private room with the door closed. The assessment looks at mobility, breathing, posture and, where appropriate and with your consent, the pelvic floor muscles directly. Any internal assessment is explained first and is always your choice. Florida is a direct-access state, so no referral is needed, and we are glad to coordinate with your neurologist or urologist.

The plan uses what the nervous system can still do. Pelvic floor training to improve strength, relaxation and coordination. Biofeedback and electrical stimulation where they help the muscles respond. Bladder retraining and urge control for urgency and leaking. Bowel routines, toileting position and coordination work for constipation and bowel leakage. And open, practical guidance on sexual function. Goals are realistic and specific to you: fewer accidents, fewer night-time trips, more confidence leaving the house. For bowel leakage specifically, see fecal incontinence.

03What To Expect

What to expect.

01

Evaluation

We take a full history of your condition and your bladder, bowel and sexual symptoms, review what your medical team is already doing, and assess movement, breathing and the pelvic floor where appropriate. Everything is explained first and paced to your energy.

02

Retrain what can be retrained

Pelvic floor work, biofeedback and electrical stimulation build strength and coordination where there is function to build. Bladder and bowel routines bring predictability to the day, and you get a home program that respects your fatigue.

03

Adapt as things change

Neurologic conditions change over time, and the plan changes with them. Your therapist reviews progress regularly, adjusts goals honestly and makes sure you have strategies you can keep using on your own.
